I was listening to a this American life podcast that talked about this contest called hands on a hard body. The contest was made into a movie and it really spells out how hard it actually is to do those contests. The movie looks pretty good and is in my netflix queue.
Unfortunately they are no longer doing the contest.
Just before a scheduled rest break 48 hours into the event, Vega dropped out, crossed a street and broke into a Kmart store, where he took a gun from a case and shot himself.

The contest was featured in a 1990s documentary by the same name. It has not been restaged since Vega’s death.
People go crazy when they have not slept for 3 days.
